Stockpiling fescue can be defined as growing pasture for later use. This typically means applying nitrogen to tall fescue pastures in August, letting them grow through the fall, and then grazing during the late fall and early winter.

The best pastures to target are those with the thickest stands of fescue. Fescue responds extremely well to nitrogen applications in late summer and has an amazing ability to retain its nutrient value through the winter. Phosphate and potash should be applied as needed.

Farmers Market

The LaRue County Farmers Market will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays now through mid-August at 2533 Lincoln Farm Rd., Hodgenville. KENTUCKY PRESS NEW SERVICE

Kentucky Agricultural Commissioner hopeful Ryan Quarles made a visit to Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg on Friday to speak with representatives from Appalachian Roots, share his plans if he is elected in November, and perhaps most importantly, hear ideas about ways to improve farming in Eastern Kentucky.

Todd Howard and Kathy Curtis opened the discussion with an explanation of Appalachian Roots’ goals: employing agriculture as a means to boost the economy and the health of the region.
