  • KDA sponsors poster and essay contest

     The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is sponsoring its annual Poster and Essay Contest themed “Agriculture Grows in my Community.”

    “Agriculture affects the economy of every Kentucky community,” Commissioner James Comer said. “Agriculture also is a vital part of every Kentucky community’s culture and heritage. I look forward to seeing how Kentucky’s young people express themselves on this important topic.”

  • Free hunter's class

     A free hunter education orange card class will be 6 p.m. Jan. 10, 11 and 12 at Lincoln Trail Gun Club, 299 Albert Willet Road, New Haven. For more information, contact Edward Lane at 270-268-9064. The class is for age 9 and older. The class is open to the public and sponsored by the LaRue County Shooting Sports Club.

     Kathy Williamson harvested this cow elk on Dec. 18 in Knott County. Kathy was guided by TLC Outfitters & Bugle Boys of Prestonsburg on her first elk hunt. She and her husband Mike are U.S. Army veterans. 

  • Cottrell named runner-up in KFB contest

     Ashley Cottrell of LaRue County and Corbin Cowles of Warren County were runners-up in the 2012 Outstanding Youth contest at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Annual Meeting Dec. 6 in Louisville.

    They each received $200 cash and a digital camera from KFB. Megan Harper of Marshall County and Coleman Stivers of Fayette County were awarded top honors and were selected from 22 district finalists.

  • 4-H Livestock Club supports Santa Bus

     4-H Livestock Club members, Vice President William Pearman, Activities Coordinator Emily Pearman presented Ann “Snookie Morrison” with donations for the Santa Bus.

  • First application deadline announced for EQIP and WHIP

     The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Kentucky is encouraging landowners, farmers and producers to visit their local NRCS office now to receive information and apply for conservation technical assistance and possible financial funding opportunities. 

  • Get 10 free trees when you join Arbor Day Foundation

     Residents of Kentucky can ring in the New Year with 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation any time during January 2013. By becoming a part of the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, new members will receive two white flowering dogwoods, two flowering crabapples, two Washington hawthorns, two American redbuds and two golden rain trees.
