  • FFA members attend rodeo

    Thirty-nine LaRue County FFA members attended the North American Championship Rodeo Nov. 11 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Members could attain a ticket by selling 15 or more boxes of fruit for the annual fundraiser.
    The rodeo was held as part of the North American International Livestock Exposition. Members visited the Giant Country Store and watched events such as the Draft Horse show.
    The rodeo was the invitational finals for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association. Events included calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding.

    FSA ballots mailed
    The deadline for eligible voters to return ballots to their local FSA offices is Dec. 5. The FSA county committee allows producers to make decisions concerning the local administration of federal farm programs. Eligible voters who do not receive a ballot can obtain ballots at their local USDA Service Center or call 765-2702.

    Enrollment date change
    The enrollment date for DCP and ACRE programs has changed and will begin Jan. 23, 2012. In the past, enrollment began Oct. 1 for both contracts.

    4-H Council
    The LaRue County 4-H Council will meet 6:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Extension Office. The meeting is open to the public. Anyone wishing to serve on the council should contact 4-H Agent Misty Wilmoth at 358-3401 or mwilmoth@uky.edu. The council oversees the county-wide 4-H program as far as planning, evaluating and funding.

  • Piggy Bank Design Contest open to LaRue County youth; entries due Dec. 2

    LaRue County youth are encouraged to design and make their own piggy bank to enter in the annual Piggy Bank Design Contest. The entries are due by Friday, Dec. 2. Completed entries may be submitted to the LaRue County Extension Office, located at 807 Old Elizabethtown Road in Hodgenville.  
    The second annual competition is used to promote America Saves Week which will take place Feb. 19-25, 2012.

  • Soybean variety plot results now available

    The LaRue County Extension Service annually conducts corn and soybean variety plots in cooperation with a local farmer and participating grain dealers. Recently, we looked at this year’s corn plot results. This week we will look at the soybean results. They, too, were on the Kevin McCubbin farm.
    The soybean plot was planted June 17 and harvested Nov. 11. All varieties were Roundup Ready Group III or IV. The field was planted no-till following corn in Nicholson soil. The beans were planted in 15-inch rows at about 160,000 seeds per acre.

  • Farm Service Agency offers electronic news service

    Farmers and ranchers in Kentucky now have a more efficient, timely option for receiving important Farm Safety Agency program eligibility requirements, deadlines and related information.

    “FSA is now offering free online communications through our GovDelivery electronic news service,” said McCauley. “News will now be sent via e-mail right to your home or farm office or to your Smartphone – allowing you to receive immediate notification of farm program news that is pertinent to your agricultural operation,” he said.

  • Extension Office Master Gardener Class to be offered in the spring

    The Hardin County Extension Office will offer a Master Gardener Class next spring.
    Classes are 9 a.m.-noon on weekdays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays on the following dates:  Feb. 21, 23, and 28; March 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 15, 20, 22, 24, 27; and April 3.
    Participants are asked to participate in a 40-hour internship to Cooperative Extension Service programs in return for the training. They will learn about botany, soils, plant diseases and insects.

  • Sandhill crane hunt begins soon

    Kentucky's first sandhill crane hunting season will open soon and hunters may  apply for permits through Nov. 30. The drawing is scheduled for Dec. 5.
    Applications are available online at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources website, www.fw.ky.gov. Each application costs $3 and a hunter may only apply once.
