    The agricultural portion of the LaRue County Fair is July 29 through Aug. 1, and it continues to feature livestock shows.

    Livestock entries are generally open to the world, but must meet several requirements including Exhibition Health Requirements with a health certificate. Some livestock show classes require an entry fee and some do not.

    Farmers Market

    The LaRue County Farmers Market will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays now through mid-August at 2533 Lincoln Farm Rd., Hodgenville. Several vendors will be participating and meal options are available. Potential vendors may contact the Extension Office for more information, 270-358-3401. Stock up on local fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, beef, pork, goat and so much more.

  • Biomass Crop Assistance Program

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) and the Farm Service Agency (FSA) is now accepting applications from foresters and farmers seeking financial assistance to harvest and deliver biomass to generate clean energy.

    Kentucky experienced near normal temperatures and well above normal rainfall over the past week.

    Precipitation for the week totaled 2.45 inches, 1.63 inches above normal. Temperatures averaged 76 degrees for the week, which was near normal. Topsoil moisture was rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 55 percent adequate and 43 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 30 percent surplus.

  • It's County Fair Time, crop exhibits

    The agricultural portion of the 2015 LaRue County Fair is July 29 to August 1. County residents are encouraged to enter garden and crop exhibits. Agriculture remains a strong part of our 108th LaRue County Fair and Livestock Expo.

    Entries for the Agricultural displays will be taken from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 29. This year there is a youth division for ages 16 and younger. There are 18 vegetable classes, 10 canning classes, and a Garden Display class for youth. 4-H entries are all in another division.

    Dairy farmers can enroll in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Margin Protection Program for coverage in 2016. The voluntary program, established by the 2014 Farm Bill, provides financial assistance to participating dairy operations when the margin, the difference between the price of milk and feed costs, falls below the coverage level selected by the farmer. Enrollment began July 1 and ends on Sept. 30, 2015, for coverage in 2016.

  • Free home freezing and canning classes

    One way to store vegetables for later use is to freeze them. When doing this it is recommended to first blanch most vegetables. Blanching is where you steam with water or submerge the vegetable pieces into boiling water for a short amount of time to stop the ripening enzymes in the food. These enzymes can cause loss of flavor, color and texture.
