    LaRue County Young Farmers

        The LaRue County Young Farmers are looking for new members! The first meeting of the year will be held at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 12 in the Community Center at Hodgenville Park. There will be a light meal, and a brief educational presentation followed by basketball.   • Timely tips for Beef Producers in October

    October is a busy time for both spring and fall-calving herds, with many cattle producers either weaning or calving now. Let’s consider some tips for managing the beef herd this month.

    For spring calving herds, producers should schedule a pregnancy exam of cows if not done previously. Winter feeding costs can be minimized by eliminating open cows prior to winterfeeding.

  • Buffalo man ranked in top ten Angus registrations

    Kelly Flanders has been ranked in the top ten of the most Angus beef cattle registered in Kentucky.

    Kelly Flanders of Buffalo ranked as the ninth largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Kentucky with the American Angus Association during fiscal year 2015, which ended September 30 according to Richard Wilson, Association interim chief executive officer.

    Angus breeders across the nation in 2015 registered 320,362 head of Angus cattle.

    4-H Beginner Sewing Class

    A series of 4-H Beginner Sewing Classes will start on Monday, October 26 at the LaRue County Extension Office. Future classes will be held on November 2, November 9 and November 16. All Classes are scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Call 270-358-3401 to pre-register.

    4-H Arts & Crafts Explorers Club

    The 4-H Arts & Crafts Explorers Club will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 at the LaRue County Extension Office.

  • 2015 county corn variety plot results

    The LaRue County Extension Service annually conducts a corn variety test plot in cooperation with a local farmer and participating grain dealers. The cooperator for 2015 was Fresh Start Farms operated by Ryan Bivens. Seed companies supply seed (limit of two varieties), assist at planting and harvest, and sponsor a field day.

    Farmers can use this yield information, along with the Kentucky Hybrid Corn Performance Test, and other plot data to help decide which varieties to grow next year.
