    Master Cattlemen Program

    Enrollment for the 2015 Kentucky Heartland Master Cattlemen Program is currently being accepted. The three county (LaRue, Hardin and Meade) Master Cattlemen Program is a ten session school on beef production, management and marketing. The first session is September 17 and continues for ten consecutive Thursday nights and the sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. Contact the LaRue County Extension Office for information for an enrollment fees form. A $100.00 registration covers all meals and program materials.

  • Ragland elected to Southern States board

    A LaRue County resident was recently elected to the Southern States Hardin Cooperative Board.

    Caleb Ragland of Magnolia was elected president of the board at the meeting of the Hardin and Hodgenville branches that was held in Hodgenville on August 28. More than eighty stockholder members and their families attended the meeting.

  • Calving Season Considerations

    Beef producers need to choose the time of year for calving that is best for their operation.  Most producers often choose spring calving because it fits with their pasture programs.  However, fall calving is most favorable weather-wise.

    Each of the different calving seasons have advantages and disadvantages that are worth considering.

  • Research explores no-till tobacco production

    University of Kentucky tobacco extension specialists have partnered with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to conduct research and promote conservation tillage to tobacco farmers.

    Conservation tillage in tobacco has been around for a while. Much of the initial research was conducted by researchers in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, but it wasn’t readily adopted by a large number of growers.

    4-H Shooting Sports Club

    The LaRue County 4-H Shooting Sports club will practice at 6:30 p.m. at the New Haven Gun Club on Thursday, September 3. The club meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month with weather permitting. Call the LaRue County Extension Office for more information at 270-358-3401.

    4-H Poultry Club

    The 4-H Poultry Club will meet on Wednesday, September 9th from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Extension Office.  New members with an interest in poultry are encouraged to attend.

    Beef Meeting – September 8

    The LaRue County Beef Cattle Association will meet Tuesday night, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the LaRue County Extension Office in Hodgenville. Plans will be discussed for Lincoln Days and Commissioner of Agriculture candidate Jean Marie Lawson Spann has accepted an invitation to speak briefly. All interested individuals are welcome to attend and a meal will be served. For more information call the LaRue County Extension Office at 270- 358-3401.

  • Three LaRue Countians Elected Angus Delegates

    Three people from LaRue County have been elected as delegates to the 132nd Annual American Angus Association Convention of Delegates on November 5 at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas.

  • Options for Weedy Pastures This Fall

    It has been a good year for weeds and farmers need to look at their pastures. They may see developing weed problems that need action to correct. If there are weed problems, here are some points to ponder.

    Consider whether or not to drill or overseed more forages into existing pasture to improve the stand, spray herbicides to control emerging broadleaf weeds, renovate the stand next spring, or do nothing.

  • 2015 Master Cattlemen Program

    Beef producers in LaRue, Hardin, and Meade counties have the opportunity this fall to participate in the Heartland Master Cattlemen Program.  

    The Master Cattlemen Program consists of 10, four hour sessions focusing on beef production and the beef industry. These individual educational sessions cover 1) Management Skills, 2) Forages, 3) Nutrition, 4) Facilities and Animal Behavior, 5) Environmental Stewardship and Industry Awareness, 6) Genetics, 7) Reproduction, 8) Herd Health, 9) End Product and 10) Marketing and Profitability.
