  • 4-H Calendar - Jan. 9, 2013

     Poultry Club

    The 4-H Poultry Club will meet 3:30-5 p.m. Jan. 9 at the LaRue County Extension Office, 807 Old Elizabethtown Road, Hodgenville.

     

    Livestock Club

    The 4-H Livestock Club will meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Extension Office. Youth interested in showing livestock are required to have a minimum of six livestock educational hours. For more information, contact Misty Wilmoth at 358-3401.

  • Fish and Wildlife to hire new officers

     Applications are being accepted for conservation officers at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.    

    “We’re going to hire 15 recruits,” said Hank Patton, director of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's Law Enforcement Division. “We have positions open in Bath, Butler, Carroll, Christian, Cumberland, Elliott, Fulton, Grant, Jessamine, Johnson, Kenton, Lewis, Magoffin, Taylor and Warren counties.”

  • COLUMN: Registration available for Master Cattlemen Program

     Beef producers in LaRue, Hardin and Meade counties have the opportunity to participate in the Heartland Master Cattlemen Program.  

    The Master Cattlemen Program consists of 10, four-hour sessions focusing on beef production and the beef industry. These individual educational sessions cover management skills, forages, nutrition, facilities and animal behavior, environmental stewardship and industry awareness, genetics, reproduction, herd health, end product and marketing and profitability.

  • KDA sponsors poster and essay contest

     The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is sponsoring its annual Poster and Essay Contest themed “Agriculture Grows in my Community.”

    “Agriculture affects the economy of every Kentucky community,” Commissioner James Comer said. “Agriculture also is a vital part of every Kentucky community’s culture and heritage. I look forward to seeing how Kentucky’s young people express themselves on this important topic.”

  • Free hunter's class

     A free hunter education orange card class will be 6 p.m. Jan. 10, 11 and 12 at Lincoln Trail Gun Club, 299 Albert Willet Road, New Haven. For more information, contact Edward Lane at 270-268-9064. The class is for age 9 and older. The class is open to the public and sponsored by the LaRue County Shooting Sports Club.

  • Cottrell named runner-up in KFB contest

     Ashley Cottrell of LaRue County and Corbin Cowles of Warren County were runners-up in the 2012 Outstanding Youth contest at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Annual Meeting Dec. 6 in Louisville.

    They each received $200 cash and a digital camera from KFB. Megan Harper of Marshall County and Coleman Stivers of Fayette County were awarded top honors and were selected from 22 district finalists.
