    Beef Meeting – September 8

    The LaRue County Beef Cattle Association will meet Tuesday night, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the LaRue County Extension Office in Hodgenville. Plans will be discussed for Lincoln Days and Commissioner of Agriculture candidate Jean Marie Lawson Spann has accepted an invitation to speak briefly. All interested individuals are welcome to attend and a meal will be served. For more information call the LaRue County Extension Office at 270- 358-3401.

    4-H Shooting Sports Club

    The LaRue County 4-H Shooting Sports club will practice at 6:30 p.m. at the New Haven Gun Club on Thursday, September 3. The club meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month with weather permitting. Call the LaRue County Extension Office for more information at 270-358-3401.

    4-H Poultry Club

    The 4-H Poultry Club will meet on Wednesday, September 9th from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the Extension Office.  New members with an interest in poultry are encouraged to attend.

  • Research explores no-till tobacco production

    University of Kentucky tobacco extension specialists have partnered with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to conduct research and promote conservation tillage to tobacco farmers.

    Conservation tillage in tobacco has been around for a while. Much of the initial research was conducted by researchers in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, but it wasn’t readily adopted by a large number of growers.

  • 2015 Master Cattlemen Program

    Beef producers in LaRue, Hardin, and Meade counties have the opportunity this fall to participate in the Heartland Master Cattlemen Program.  

    The Master Cattlemen Program consists of 10, four hour sessions focusing on beef production and the beef industry. These individual educational sessions cover 1) Management Skills, 2) Forages, 3) Nutrition, 4) Facilities and Animal Behavior, 5) Environmental Stewardship and Industry Awareness, 6) Genetics, 7) Reproduction, 8) Herd Health, 9) End Product and 10) Marketing and Profitability.

  • Southern States Local Annual Meeting Set

    Southern States Cooperative will review its operations at a series of local annual meetings, including the upcoming meeting for members of Southern States Hardin Cooperative at the Hardin and Hodgenville Branches.

  • Grain Field Day and Grain Yield Contests

    The annual LaRue County Extension Grain Field Day will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 1 at Fresh Start Farms, operated by Ryan and Misty Bivens. The farm is located at 4109 Sonora Road (KY 84) in Hodgenville.

    We will look at Extension’s corn and soybean variety plots on the farm.  They include 25 Roundup Ready corn varieties that were planted on May 15 and 27 Roundup Ready Group IV soybean varieties, double cropped on June 25 after wheat.

    4-H Teen Leadership Academy

    Applications are due to the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 21 for teens wanting to be considered for the 4-H Teen Leadership Academy. The nine month leadership program is open to teens who are in grades 8 to 11. Only 5 people will be selected to participate from LaRue County.

    The program is a joint program with Hardin, Meade, Breckinridge and Grayson Counties. For more information, or an application, contact the Extension Office at 270-358-3401.
