  • Randall “Showboat” and Shirley Ramsey of Sonora celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 12, 2011, at their residence.

    They were married Aug. 12, 1961, by the Rev. Earl Sanders at his residence.

    They have three children, Lettie Lamkin and Sharon Crewz of Sonora and Samra Larrison of Hodgenville, who were raised at various fast pitch ball parks around the area.

    They have 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

    Shirley Ramsey is the daughter of the late Johnny Botts and Birdie Hornback.

  • Because tomatoes may be borderline in the amount of acid they contain, or even slightly low-acid for canning purposes, some precautions must be taken to can them safely. To ensure the safety of whole, crushed or juiced tomatoes they must be acidified, whether processed in a boiling water bath or pressure canner.
    To acidify tomatoes, add 1 tablespoon of bottled lemon juice or 1/4 teaspoon citric acid per pint of tomatoes. For quart jars, use 2 tablespoons of bottled lemon juice or 1/2 teaspoon citric acid.

  • August is here! And you know what that means: It is time to start our monthly membership luncheons again.
    Make sure to attend our August membership luncheon at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 17 in the Lincoln Museum Community Room. Our guest speaker is Col. Mark Needham, special assistant to the Governor for base realignment and executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs. Our luncheon sponsor is Childress Insurance. Please RSVP no later than noon Tuesday, Aug. 16. Cost to attend is $8.

    Volunteers needed for Kentucky State Fair
    The LaRue County Chamber of Commerce needs volunteers for the Pride of the Counties booth at the Kentucky State Fair Aug. 18-28. All volunteers that help with the booth will have free admission to the fair. For more information, call the Chamber at 358-3411.

  • James and Betty French of Hodgenville will celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary on Aug. 15, 2011.
    They have two children, Lisa Stanfield and Donna Wilson, and seven grandchildren.

  • Garnett Shuffett and Lillian French celebrated birthdays in August at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.

  • The families of Tootie Burba, of Hodgenville, and Lillian Kirkpatrick, formerly of Mount Sherman, invite friends to a combined birthday celebration to be at Ovesen Heights Baptist Church ministry center 3-5 p.m. Aug. 13.

  • Ensign Timothy J. Ruth graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., on May 27, 2011, and was commissioned into the U.S. Navy. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in economics.
    He was inducted into the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and presented a flag by U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie. The flag was flown over the Capitol in Ruth’s honor on May 27.
