  • 4-H calendar

    Teen Leadership

    Applications for the 4-H Teen Leadership Academy are due at the Extension Service office by 4:30 p.m. Aug. 3. The program is open to 8th-11th graders and will include day-long sessions each month from September through April focusing on improving leadership and communication skills. Applications are available from the Extension Service.

     

    Rabbit show

    The State Fair 4-H Rabbit Show will be Aug. 21. Return entry form to the Extension Service office before 4:30 p.m. Aug. 7.

  • Butterflies prefer Lilliput zinnias

    Many gardeners plant zinnias because of their vibrant colors and ability to attract butterflies. In a recent study, researchers with the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture found butterflies are attracted to one zinnia cultivar over others.

    UK Entomology Professor Ken Yeargan and Graduate Research Assistant Sarah Colvin found that Lilliput zinnias attracted more than twice the number of butterflies than State Fair, Pinwheel and Oklahoma cultivars during a seven-week period.

  • Bell attends Circuit Court Clerks summer college

    Larry C. Bell, circuit court clerk for LaRue County, participated in the 2009 Circuit Court Clerks Summer College June 10-12 in Lexington.

    The Administrative Office of the Courts hosted the college, which offered sessions on how to improve and safeguard the Office of Circuit Court Clerk. Participants received 12.25 hours of continuing education credit.

    Extension Agent for 4-H

    Seventy-one campers and 17 teen and adult leaders spent four days at Lake Cumberland enjoying swimming, boating, fishing, archery, riflery, arts and crafts, recreation, high ropes, low ropes and outdoor cooking June 29-July 2.

  • ECTC offers poetry contest

    The Heartland Review, the literary publication published by Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, is offering a poetry contest for area residents.

    First place in the Ruth Redel Poetry Contest is $200 and publication in The Heartland Review Fall 2009 issue.

    THR asks for a $3 tax-deductible contribution for each poem to support the contest and journal. Make checks out to The Heartland Review. Send a cover page with contact information and titles of poems name, address, and a short biography (40 words maximum).

  • LaRue cancer survivors featured in photo exhibit

    “The Faces of Cancer,” a special photo exhibit, was unveiled at a cancer survivor celebration, “Hope Soars … Celebrating Life” June 28 at My Old Kentucky Home State Park. The exhibit features survivors from LaRue, Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington counties. Two Hodgenville residents, Sue Young and Ramona Coffey, are survivors portrayed on the exhibit. The exhibit, donated by Lakeview Photography in Bardstown, will travel the eight-county region, stopping first at Flaget Memorial Hospital.

  • Follow these tips when canning fruits and veggies

    Why is open kettle canning not recommended?

    In open kettle canning, food is cooked in an ordinary kettle, then packed into hot jars and sealed without processing. The temperatures obtained in open kettle canning are not high enough to destroy all spoilage and food poisoning organisms that may be in the food. Also, microorganisms can enter the food when it is transferred from the kettle to jar and cause spoilage.
