Sgt. 1st Class Arthur Jones doesn’t consider himself an artist, but when he saw a portrait of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Museum in Hodgenville, he made up his mind that he would make his own portrait of the 16th President.

Instead of paint and brush, however, Jones used all Lincoln-head pennies, including some that were minted in 1909, 100 years after the Great Emancipator was born. 

Lincoln holds a special place in Jones’s heart, partly because the sergeant is a native Kentuckian.

I’ve gotten a variety of calls and e-mails recently on topics related to nutrition and food safety. I wanted to remind everyone to always keep food safety in mind whether you are trying to do home canning or just making purchases for your family.

Q. Is it safe to process food in the oven, or try to do home canning in the oven?

A. This method involves placing filled jars in the oven set at a specific temperature and “processing” for a certain period of time. This method has never been recommended as a safe procedure for a variety of reasons.

The Kentucky National Guard will host the Women’s Annual Veterans Experience: Leaving No Soldier Behind on Sept. 11-13 at the Lexington Convention Center. 

Open to the public, the conference will provide a relaxing environment for all female military veterans to better understand and enhance their unique military experiences. Women veterans of all different ages and backgrounds are invited to come together and share their stories of what it is like to be a woman in the military.

Laura LaRue, executive officer of Lincoln Trail Home Builders Association, attended a four-day educational seminar at the Galt House Hotel & Suites in Louisville presented by the Executive Officers Council of the National Association of Home Builders. About 300 people attended the event.

Lincoln Trail HBA represents more than 400 builders and their associates in the housing industry in a five-county area that includes LaRue.
