  • Our lives are so uncertain

    As I stood at the church door greeting people Sunday, I received a phone call that my nephew in Augusta, Ga., was found dead. What a shock!

    We buried his mother (my sister) less than three months ago. His father has advanced Parkinson’s disease and the three of them lived together, with my nephew caring for his father and mother. His father has been sick for a long time, so no one would have predicted that my sister and my nephew would have died first.

  • It’s time to take a serious look at America

    Few if any would argue that the church’s influence is waning in our secular society. We have been witness to a generation reared with very few moral absolutes in the home, schools and even churches.

    Go back through history and you will find that when the home collapses, and there is an accompanying loss of moral values, a nation will not last past one or two generations, unless there is a spiritual renewal. Many would say that we are witnessing the disintegration of a culture in our lifetime. We have lost the concept of personal responsibility for our own transgressions.

  • Deal with discouragement one step at a time

    All of us at times get discouraged causing us to be defeated in our worthwhile goals in life. What causes discouragement?

    Discouragement may begin in the home. Some are easily discouraged because of experiences they had as children. Children who are not loved easily turn from their goals in life. They feel unworthy of pursuing worthy goals.

    Sometimes standards are too high in the home. The child does his best, but it never seems to be good enough. Such children never really have satisfying experiences.

  • Hear and heed what he says

    The human voice is a wonderful thing. Man is the only animal to which God gave the gift of speech. With his voice man is able to say “I love you,” sing praises to God, make his wishes known, express appreciation, pray to God and preach the unsearchable riches of God.

    It would have been wonderful to have lived on the earth when Jesus was here and have heard his voice. Surely it was rich, full and vibrant. But there is something more important than the sound of the voice and it is what you say with that voice.

  • People are more important than wealth

    Recently it was my honor to bring the first graduation address for the Leitchfield Christian Academy, which was founded during my ministry there. My message began with some remarks from the late Sir Winston Churchill made some years ago at a Yale commencement where he followed a Yale alumnus who was receiving an honorary degree. The alumnus had elaborated extensively about the university with each letter of “YALE” a point in his speech.
