  • COLUMN: One man showed faith through planting crosses

They’re called Crosses of Mercy, three tall crosses — two pale blue and one gold — planted across at least 29 states and Washington, D.C., plus Zambia and the Philippines.

Where I live in Florida, I’ve seen several sets of them and I’ve always wondered about them since they don’t seem to be connected to any one church. They’re usually out in the middle of nowhere, randomly planted on the highway.

  • COLUMN: Remember the dead but don't forget the living

We human beings are forgetful about many things. Like the man who said sometimes he got undressed to get a shower and suddenly he could not remember if he was getting in or getting out of the shower. Or another person said they would find themselves on the stairway and couldn't remember if they were going up or coming down the stairs.

The worst forgetfulness is to forget people. This Memorial Day weekend think of others, love others and remember others. Remember deceased and living people this weekend.

  • COLUMN: A proverb a day makes one wise

A wise man will hear and increase learning and a man of understanding will attain free counsel. Proverbs 1:5

The principal author of Proverbs as King Solomon who was one of the wisest men who ever lived and one of the richest too.

Solomon collected as well as wrote the proverbs. In I Kings 4:32 we read that he spoke 3,000 proverbs. In Ecclesiastes 1:1 he called himself “the preacher.” As such, he no doubt collected and quoted useful expressions just as a modern preacher might quote a poem or other saying.

  • TOUCHPOINTS: Our life is but a vapor

This past weekend, my oldest grandson with his girlfriend, attended the Junior-Senior Prom. And I realized just how fast time goes by.

As I thought of my children’s prom night, and even my own, I am amazed at the truth of scripture: “For what is your life? It is even a vapor (morning fog) that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.” James 4:14.

  • COLUMN: Train for leadership through service to others

The king … had high admiration for Naaman, the commander-in-chief of his army. II Kings 5:1

The mark of true leadership is the ability to serve – not strut.

Although Naaman was the highest-ranking general is Syria, he served under the king. No matter how elevated you become, you must stay accountable. It’s what balances you and keeps you in touch with reality. When you forget how it feels to serve others, you develop a sense of entitlement and become dictatorial, overbearing and downright miserable to be around.
