  • COLUMN: Lord, help me find patience - right now

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope. Psalms 130:5

This verse gives us two specific instructions: wait for the Lord and put your hope in his word.

So many times we want to rush ahead of the Lord. We think we know what action to take and how to proceed, but the Bible clearly instructs us to wait for the Lord to work, to instruct and to lead.

  • COLUMN: Remain in the joy of the Lord

“Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord” (Philippians 3:1). When we become Christians we have the “joy of the Lord.” But over time and through many experiences some seem to lose their joy.

King David lost his joy and came to the Lord with the request – “Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation” (Psalm 51:12). For David it was adultery, but there are many other joy killers in life. Our concern today is how to restore or maintain the joy God gives us.

  • COLUMN: Religious terms can be confusing

When I was a young child I spent many days with my grandparents, Papa and Mother. Their house was right next door to Beard’s country store in Buffalo.

One morning, Mother sent me to the store to get her a wet mop (as opposed to a dust mop). I skipped across the drive and bounded into the store. The owner was busy with customers and didn’t really pay any attention to me because I was in there so often.

  • COLUMN: Do everything without complaining

The Apostle Paul advised the Philippians: “Do everything without complaining” (2:14).

Complaining kills joy and makes you unhappy. No one likes to be around a complainer.

The problem with complaining is that once you start it is hard to stop. It can easily become a habit and you find something to complain about all the time.

Society encourages us to complain. Look at the headlines in your newspaper or listen to the news on TV. There is bad news everywhere.

  • COLUMN: Take steps toward harmony

God made us to have relationships – with him and with other people. Since the time of Adam and Eve maintaining relationships has been a major struggle. We have to work to keep relationships up to date, because strained relationships cause much unhappiness.

How do we handle conflict and strive for unity? In unity there is tremendous power and potential, but people don’t always get along. Our concern then is in reducing conflict and increasing cooperation.

  • COLUMN: Behold the dangers of 'ditto'

How many times have you heard, “I have said that before.” (Maybe accompanied by, “Do you hear well?”)

Then there is the more disparaging, “I’ve heard that before .…”

Faith community people believe in the power of ditto, too. We have one and three year cycles of repeating valuable scripture passages. Same words – but we are different in some ways each time around?

  • Column: Christ is our calm in the storm

He [Jesus] got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be Still!”  Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.  Mark 4:39

Dark clouds on the horizon signify another line of thunderstorms marching in from the West. The calm before the storm gives no indication of danger, but in a matter of minutes the winds can increase, hail can rain down and fierce lightning can strike.

  • COLUMN: Run the race for Christ

The Apostle Paul ran a race for the Lord Jesus Christ. He explained to the Philippians (3:10-16) some of the things involved in his race.

First, he said, “I must know Him.”
