  • Living in God’s smile

In Numbers 6:24-26 God spoke to Moses that Aaron was to pronounce a blessing upon the children of Israel.  We have heard this as a benediction by ministers in worship services.  “The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace.”

  • Secret sin

All of us face a common temptation to sin, especially in secret. Our particular temptations may be different, but our struggle with sin is real. God has a lot to say to help us as we struggle with secret sin.

Romans 7:15 “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

  • We will serve the Lord

Last week I referred to the experience of the children of Israel as they were about to enter the Promised Land.  In Joshua 24:14-18 they are given a choice --- whether to serve God or not.  We spoke of the temptations that they had to face then and that we have to face today.

They would have testings in the new land.  It would not be easy for them in the new land.  Would they hold on to God when trouble came?  They like their forefathers had to decide if they would stay close to God when the battles came.

  • Living with compassion

Compassion is hard. So many times, we attempt to justify our merciless actions of indifference by looking at the life of another individual through a fleshly lens of value. As a result, we ignore true needs of those around us and justify our self-righteous activities. This approach to life comes naturally because it is motivated and led by the self-centered nature of the flesh.

  • We get to choose

Did you make any resolutions for 2018?  Some people laugh at them and say why make them because we will only break them.  But that could be a mistake.  Resolutions may remind us that there are areas in our lives that need improving.  They may help us to make needed changes.

  • Gambling: Good or bad?

As I write this column, the lottery is hitting some amazing levels. I’ve heard several people who are excited about this. What is a Christian to think about gambling and the lottery? What does God say? Let’s put aside our opinions, traditions, and practices and consider God’s truth.

Avoid Arrogance. I hear a lot of arrogance on this issue. I’ve heard preachers condemning gamblers with a self-righteous tone. I’ve heard gamblers condemning Christians who share their opinion on the matter. We need to humble ourselves on this issue.

  • The Way to Good Days in 2018

The Apostle Peter says, “Whoever would love life and see good days must …” (1Peter 3:10-12). Peter goes ahead to tell us some things that we must do to see these good days. These are fascinating verses as we enter a new year for all of us would like good days in 2018.

  • Breaking the Holy huddle
  • Wise men - Then and now

There are so many questions about the wise men who journeyed to see the newborn King --- who were they?  From where did they come?  How did they know to follow the star?  How many were there?

They seem to come out of nowhere, worship the newborn King and disappear back into nowhere.  Legend tells us things about their origin, their number and their person.

  • Finding joy

Joy is not automatic. It is a choice we make. We must be intentional about listening, believing, receiving, seeking, and then remaining in joy. By nature we default to despair, discouragement, distrust, and depression. How did your Christmas go? How did your 2017 go? Did you find joy? If not, do you want to? If so, do you want more joy in 2018? Here are a few tips from God on finding joy in our short-lived lives!

“Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2:10
