  • COLUMN: It's time to check the stitches of our country

Some years ago, a picture of the historic flag designed by Betsy Ross appeared around July 4 on the front page of a Chicago newspaper. Underneath the picture were the words, "It's time to check our stitches again." It's almost July 4 again, and in my opinion we need to check our stitches to see if we are still the home of the brave and the land of the free.

  • COLUMN: Say a good prayer for everyone

There are times in life when we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place and we need someone to rescue us. The psalmist seems to be in such a place when he pleads with God in Psalm 141 to “come quickly.” He says, “Hasten to me. Give ear to my voice when I call to Thee.”
God loves for his children to talk to him in prayer. Someone has said that prayer is our talking to God and Bible reading is God talking to us.

  • Suffering: Christ did it, we do it

“Why is this happening to me?”

This question is raised all the time. Maybe you have raised it. It would be uncommon if you did not. Suffering comes to all of us. Some suffering is just a part of life. Some is because of our bad choices. Sometimes we suffer for doing good and being a believer.

Paul has some inspiring and informative things on the subject in 1 Peter 4:12-19. Suffering is bound to happen.

  • Learn to live a life that is true

The hymn says, “Living for Jesus, a life that is true, striving to please Him in all that I do ….”

Titus 2:11-15 gives three suggestions that would help us in our living for Jesus.

First, we are told to turn from godless living. Ungodliness refers to the immoral, wicked, and evil. It has to do with that which has no place for God and for the things of God. We are told to love the things of God and to walk in His ways while turning our backs on ungodliness.

  • God created 'Mother Nature' and everything else

I am troubled when I hear people refer to God’s creation as “Mother Nature.”

The Graeco-Roman Goddess, Cybele, was worshipped as Mother-earth, known as “the Great Mother.”

The earth, our planet, was formed and made by God himself.

  • Preservation and perseverance: Two great truths

One of my favorite New Testament scriptures is John 10:27-30. Jesus is pictured as the good shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. We are the sheep who hear, respond to and follow the shepherd. This scripture reveals two great biblical truths: preservation and perseverance.

Preservation is seen in John 10:28-29. Jesus said, “I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish.”
