  • COLUMN: Grow stronger with time

The story is told of a young construction site worker who bragged that he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. One of the older workers finally had his fill and said to the young man, “Why don't you put your money where your money where your mouth is. I will bet you a week's wage that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you will be unable to wheel back.”

“You’re on, old man,” replied the young braggart. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”

  • TOUCHPOINTS: It is possible to know God

To know God is possible, and such knowledge is found through personal devotional life and spiritual practice.

We learn from scripture that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).

So how do we obtain faith? Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17).

In order to have the faith God is speaking about would be spending time in his word.

  • COLUMN: Jesus -- The greatest Valentine

The words “I love you”engraved on a red valentine can send our hearts racing with joy when received from someone special. Candy, flowers, cards, teddy bears - all send the message of love to those we cherish on Valentine’s Day.

Recently, I came across a scrapbook of Valentine cards I had received as a small child. They had been special to me then and they were heartwarming to read many years later.

The children hosted the event, decorating and setting up food for the guests. After the gifts were unwrapped they were delivered to SpringHaven, a local women’s shelter. Children are Kaleigh Graham, Patricia Keys, Hannah Boggs, Catherine Spalding, Jake Skaggs, Peyton Foster, and Christian Veirs. Not pictured: Tyler Foster.

  • TOUCHPOINTS: Do your feet race to do wrong?

In Proverbs 6:16-19 we read about “six things the Lord hates – no, seven things he detests:”

    1. Haughty eyes, being arrogantly proud, overbearing and self-important.

    2. A lying tongue: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” You can actually kill someone with words. When you speak words of slander, gossip, false accusation, hatred, criticism, discouragement and contempt, you can actually kill someone. Such words over days and weeks, months and years can actually break someone’s spirit.

  • COLUMN: As a man thinketh ...

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Our thoughts affect our behavior for good or evil. If a person dwells on negative thoughts that person will become negative and pessimistic. If we fill our minds with good thoughts, we will do good things.

There is a relation between our thoughts and our behavior. What we think about, we do. If we fill our thought life with wholesome things, the result will be seen in every area of life.

  • COLUMN: Jesus stepped in when a substitute was needed

We are living in a day of substitutes. Many foods and other articles have been replaced by something else.

We have substitutes for sugar, salt, certain metals, wood.
