  • Influencing people

Do you do anything just like your parents did?  Parents do influence children in certain ways.  You remember the old TV commercial with the father and young son walking by the lake.  Father picks up a rock and throws it skipping across the water.  The young son repeats the father’s action.

We all have an influence upon others.  Sometimes we sharpen them.  Sometimes we drag them down.  But we do influence people in various ways about many things.

  • When mercy is the severest gift

Over the years I’ve heard hundreds of stories from people about how they came to faith in Christ, or how God delivered them from something that had them bound or how they were drawn closer to God because of a certain situation.

More often than not, the circumstances that precede the turning point or the epiphany or the moment of surrender or rescue are dire, tragic and painful. Sometimes the painful situation is what God uses to bring a person from no faith to new faith or running from God to running to him.

  • Blessing America

Arnold Toynbee, the distinguished historian, said, “No major nation has ever been murdered.  They have committed suicide and rotted on the inside.”  I cast my lot with those who believe that our nation is in decline. Our greatest threat is not from without, but within.  We have long been on the path of committing suicide.  Our disobedience to the laws of God seems to be more blatant every year.  If our nation is to remain blessed we must be right before God, live right before men and stand for what is right.

  • The truth about lying

I don’t know about you, but I hate being lied to.

A few weeks ago we drove to Tampa, which is about 70 miles from where we live. That same day, we needed to go to Port Charlotte, which is south of Tampa.

    How far south, you ask?

Well, according to the “distance between two cities” online calculator I used, Port Charlotte is 70 miles south of Tampa.

    Except the calculator lied.

We drove and drove and drove and about 110 miles later got to Port Charlotte.

    I hate being lied to.

  • God bless America

As America celebrates another birthday, some things are very evident.  America has enjoyed the many blessings of God.  We have become the world’s greatest economic, political and cultural power evidenced by an unparalleled stand of living.

But will America continue to enjoy these blessings?  Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”  Does this verse forecast what lies ahead for America?

The day started at Sunrise Manor nursing home during the morning worship services, where people focused on music from Brother Tim Shockley and Tess Smith (wife of Tony Smith), followed by the morning sermon from Rev.
