  • Wesley Meadows strives toward excellence

Wesley Meadows United Methodist Church started the fall season off Saturday with a bang. It was time for the annual Lord’s Project Auction. Before that was a barbecue dinner. Even though it was a slight chill in the air, members brought items for the auction as well as food for the dinner.

The auction has been held every fall since 1978 under the leadership of Bro. Tom Morrison. Church members donate homemade items, plants, hay, wood and others for the auction. The first auction brought in $3,000.

  • Leave a lasting legacy for your family

My 6-year-old granddaughter, Layla, had seriously taken in the entire funeral service for her beloved Papa; the songs sung and the words spoken had touched her tender little heart. One minister told those present that Tom would want all of us to continue telling others about Jesus. The day after the funeral, Layla was playing at my house with a little boy who had been in church very little.  On his way home, he asked his stepmom, “Did God really make me?”

She answered, “Why, yes he did! What makes you ask that?”

  • God says we’ll be tempted, tried and tested

Do you know the difference in being tested and temptation?

We know in school students are tested regularly on how they are retaining and understanding the material they are learning. Customers test-drive vehicles to see if they perform as advertised before buying. Our character and spiritual commitments are tested by the fires of hardship, persecution and suffering. The Bible distinguishes between temptation, which is used by Satan to lead into sin, and testing which is used by God to purify us and move us toward maturity and growth.

  • Bad things happen to good people

Very few people go through life without something bad happening. Bad things happen. Why?

Sometimes bad things happen because the devil is real, evil, a spiritual being, powerful, and out to deceive and destroy us. “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (I Peter 5:8-9)

A second thing to remember is that sometimes bad things happen because we live in an imperfect world where imperfect things happen. Cars break down, our health fails, money runs out, children go astray, loved ones die, and so it goes.

  • You were saved to serve

Am I useful or useless in this world? As a Christian, am I doing this thing called the Christian life right? Do I make the most of the moments God gives me?  We can do some stupid things in the service of the Lord.

When some people criticized the woman for pouring expensive perfume on his head, Jesus said that she did what she could do. That is all God asks of anyone. Fanny Crosby wrote more than 4,000 hymns. On her tombstone are the words, “She did what she could, Mark 14.”

  • Believers in Christ receive spiritual blessings

Believers in Christ are blessed. Paul says in Ephesians 1:3, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”

One blessing the believer has is help for daily living. We all need help in life at various times – with raising our children, with our marriages, with our work and with our relationships. God can help us with these and more if we will seek him and seek his guidance in his word.
