  • COLUMN: Come see, go tell

Christians from all over the world gathered last Sunday to remember and reinforce our faith in the living Christ. Jesus Christ is the only hope for this life and the next.

We were sinners and were dead in trespasses and sin, but God in his great love for us sent Jesus to die for our sins.

Jesus said, “I am the Way ….” (John 14:6). He is the only way to everlasting life and to a heavenly home. The hymn says, “I must need go home by the way of the cross, there is no other way but this.”

  • First Baptist celebrates Usher Day

The late Rev. Dixon Connor organized the First Baptist Usher Board in 1957.

Liza Lasley was named “Mother of the Usher Board.” The members of the first usher board were Blond Goodin, Alfred Moore, Rev. Ralph and Ruth Reed, Ora Sloan, Liza Lasley, Maxine Powell, and Regina “Johnny” Montgomery, who all are deceased. These members served for three years with three new additions added. They were R.B. Smith (deceased), Joe Louis Smith and Don Burbridge.

Our recent member, Darrell Williams, and R.B. Smith passed away March 7.

  • TOUCH POINTS: On this rock I will build my church

Jesus said, “I will build my church” (ecclesia). And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

“Ecclesia” means a called out assembly or congregation; political (Acts 19:39); Christian (Ephesians 1:22,23); or national (Acts 7:38).

God calls the saved out of the world to congregate in worship. This is the church in the world – in it but not of it. Jesus’ church is not synonymous with Christendom (Christians as a whole).

  • COLUMN: Answer when Jesus calls

Go with me to John’s gospel, chapter 20 and verses 11-18 to read once again concerning the resurrection of Jesus. Mary was the first person Jesus spoke to early that resurrection morning. Why didn’t he speak to Pilate or some of the religious leaders?
