     I remember first learning about Kentucky History in Mrs. Warnick’s 4th grade class. She was a Civil War buff and dressed up as a pioneer woman when we discussed that period in Kentucky’s history. She and her husband would participate in different Civil War reenactments in various locations. 

    I remember being fascinated that a President was born in Kentucky and wondered where and what kind of town Hodgenville must be to raise such an amazing man like Abraham Lincoln.

  • COLUMN: Be mindful of your eating habits

     One of the most common New Year’s resolutions we make is to lose weight. Mindful eating means you eat slowly and become more aware of when you become full, which prevents overeating.

    When we eat too fast our body doesn’t have enough time to send signals to the brain to tell us that we are full. It takes 20 minutes for food to reach the first part of the small intestine after its ingested. At this point our bodies send the “full” signals to the brain to stop eating.

  • Bell to celebrate 94th birthday

     Rosalie Metcalf Bell of Wyanet, Ill., will celebrate her 94th birthday Feb. 9, 2013.

    She was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Athertonville and lived in Kentucky several years before moving to Illinois.

    She retired from Harper and Wyman in Princeton, Ill. and worked also at Hollywood Vasserette.

    She and her former husband Donald ran the Blue Ribbon Luncheonette in Hodgenville.

  • It's National Soup Month!

      When the weather gets cool, or downright cold as it has over the past few days and as it is expected to be most of next week, I really like to serve my family soup, stew or chili. Most of the recipes I use are easy and economical – both key factors in remaining in my recipe file.

    Since January is National Soup Month and since the weather has been decidedly colder, I thought I’d share some of my favorite soup recipes.

  • Eastridges celebrate 50 years

     James “Bud” and Shirley Shipp Eastridge of Sonora will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

    They were married Jan. 26, 1963, at Oak Hill Baptist Church in Sonora.

    They have three children, Sindy Durham and Christy Vertrees, both of Sonora; and Mike Eastridge of Hodgenville; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    The celebration is 2-5 p.m. Jan. 27, 2013, at First Baptist Sonora MRC Building (former Sonora Elementary School).

    All friends and relatives are invited to attend.
