  • Music, dinner, auction this Saturday on Main Street

    Where can you get an excellent dinner, really entertaining music (Water’s Edge vocals) and a chance to outbid your neighbor for gift certificates from restaurants, decorative items, art and other goodies?

    It’s the Main Street Dinner on Saturday night at the Civic Center.

    If you want to check out the auction items, come early. Doors open at 5 p.m. for auction viewing; dinner is at 6 p.m. The concert is at 7:45. It’s a tight schedule, with three auction tables closing one at a time instead of at the end.

  • Hardin County Water District No. 2 claims title for best-tasting water

    Hardin County and a few LaRue County residents can now claim that they drink some of the best-tasting water in all of North America, thanks to a nation-wide competition that recognized the county’s water as some of the “Best of the Best.”

    On June 22, Hardin County Water District No. 2 competed at the AWWA North American Convention. As champions of a Section level competition in July of last year, the Water District represented the Kentucky-Tennessee area in the national competition.

  • Hodgenville city clerk recognized

    Hodgenville City Clerk MaDonna Hornback received the prestigious Certified Kentucky Municipal Clerk designation at the 31st Kentucky Municipal Clerk’s Institute in Georgetown in July. Hornback is the first city clerk from Hodgenville to obtain this certification.

  • Bad eating habits can be broken with help

    Do any of these food situations apply to you? Check all that apply from the past week:

  • The cost of raising a child is rising

    In 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report estimating the annual expenses associated with raising children in two-parent and single-parent households. On average, households in the lowest income group spent 25 percent of their before-tax income on a child; those in the middle-income group, 16 percent; and those in the highest group, 12 percent.

    Total family expenditures on a child (for a total of 18 years), by single-parent and two-parent households:

    • $149,760 for single parent households

    • $160,410 for two-parent households

    County Clerk announces hours

    The LaRue County Clerk’s office will be open half day Sept. 1 and all day Sept. 2. The office will close Sept. 4 and 6 to honor Labor Day.

  • 4-H dog show brings out pooches and proud owners

    The LaRue County 4-H Dog Show was held July 24. Eight club members participated in the show and competed in obedience and agility classes.

    Sarah Lope also participated in a costume class with her dog Spike.

    The agility course included several obstacles that the handlers took the dog through. Included was a tunnel, a platform the dogs walked up and back down, as well a hoop that the dogs jumped through.

    Story Time

    Story time with stories, activities and nursery rhymes for preschool children is 11-11:30 a.m. every Tuesday at the LaRue Public Library.

    AR tutoring

    Accelerated Reading tutoring is 4-4:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the LaRue Public Library. Find the right books with the right grade level.

    Homeschool program

    A program for homeschoolers is 1-2 p.m. every Wednesday at the LaRue Public Library. Support group and unit study. All ages welcome.
