Think about the last time you journeyed somewhere new and foreign. There were many preparations that had to be made, including an itinerary of places to visit and even places to avoid. The traveler tries to learn as much information ahead of time about the places that will be visited so the trip doesn’t seem so scary or overwhelming. The end result of any journey is to return home again with lots of wonderful memories and stories to tell.
Hodgenville State Farm Agent Denise Brooks and her team Kimberly Jennett, David Whitlock and Adam Cecil, received the prestigious Summit Award and the Second Place Team Winner of the 2009 Fall Life Campaign in Kentucky and Tennessee during State Farm’s fall planning conference.
To qualify for the award, her agency had to write a minimum of 100 applications across six lines of insurance with zero zeros - Auto, Fire, Life, Health, Bank and Mutual Funds.
A trip to Montgomery, Ind., Amish Country, is being planned for Dec. 11.
Hodgenville resident Stephen A. Brown is organizing the all-day bus trip. An Amish or Mennonite guide will offer insight to the community. Four or five farms will be visited to see furniture making, quilt making and preserving and canning. A sit-down meal with a local family is included.

The LaRue County Early Childhood Council sponsored six hours of training for local child-care workers Nov. 14 at the Extension Service office. Two topics were covered: Elizabeth Lancaster presented Kentucky’s early childhood standards and field guides. She is the early childhood special education coordinator for Hardin County Schools. Kathy Crawford, retired from LaRue County Public Library youth programs, shared information on bringing books to life.
When I drive through a community that I don’t know at night, if there are no lights in the holidays or any time I get the impression that the place is dead at dark - and maybe during the day, too. But if the shops all look inviting I make a note to return in daytime.
Savvy retailers everywhere use lights to draw attention to their wares, to draw people in. The cost in most cases is minimal but equivalent to having a round-the-clock advertisement working for you, which makes it a pretty good investment.

The “Home for the Holidays” medicine management campaign is being unveiled during this holiday season in conjunction with the Eldercare Locator, a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, and Consumers Union, a non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports. The campaign’s goal is to assist older adults and their caregivers in making smart, economical health-care decisions.
