There should be at least one smoke detector outside of each sleeping area and on every floor of your home. For increased protection, it is recommended that a smoke detector be installed in each bedroom. All smoke detectors should be inspected and tested on a monthly basis. Properly installed and working smoke detectors will provide an early warning and nearly double the chance of surviving a fire.

Byron Crawford, retired Courier-Journal columnist who has been described as “Kentucky’s storyteller,” will be the guest speaker at Campbellsville University’s second annual Derby Rose Gala on Monday, April 26, at Winters Dining Hall in the E. Bruce Heilman Student Complex at 411 N. Columbia Ave., Campbellsville.

The dinner begins at 7 p.m. with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. The Campbellsville University Board of Advancement is planning the scholarship fundraising event. Tickets are $100 per person.

Sibling Day, which falls on April 10, is a new holiday that the Sibling Day Foundation, a public non-profit charity, is working toward making a federal holiday. Making this a holiday, like Mother’s and Father’s Day, they hope to benefit families and communities. Since 1998, 33 states officially have established Siblings Day. Kentucky is not one of these states. Sibling Day offers brothers and sisters around the country a special day to honor and acknowledge living siblings and remember those who died.

In light of ongoing bad news about joblessness in Kentucky and with state and federal budgets experiencing record shortfalls, supporting and maintaining successful programs that have a demonstrated return on investment is of paramount importance to our state’s future. Preservationists across the state are rallying to remind elected officials and their local leaders and decision makers that preserving a community’s historic assets not only generates public-private investment but creates jobs and spurs related investment.
