  • ANNIVERSARY: Rodney and Willie Ann Peace celebrate 50 years

     Rodney and Willie Anne Higdon Peace of Magnolia will celebrate their 50th anniversary on July 15, 2012.

    The couple married July 15, 1962.

    Willie Ann was born and raised in Hodgenville. She is the daughter of Daisy Mae Bratcher Higdon and Ancil Abselent Higdon.

    Rodney is the son of Lura Geneva Slayton Peace and Alberton “Shorty” Peace of Hart County.

    Rodney was 18 and Willie was 16 when they married.

  • LaRue County Fair Pageants

     The LaRue County Fair Board is seeking participants for several beauty pageants.

    Applications for all pageants may be picked up at the LaRue County Extension Service office, LaRue County Chamber of Commerce or www.laruecofair.com.

    Pre-register by July 23.

    The events are as follows:

    • Miss LaRue County Fair, ages 16-21. The pageant is 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 30.  All contestants must be a resident of Kentucky.

    • Miss Teen, ages 13-15. The pageant is 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 31.

    All-you-can-eat breakfast

    Ancestral Trails to meet
    Ancestral Trails Historical Society will meet 7 p.m. July 6 at the Hardin County Public Library, 100 Jim Owen Drive, Elizabethtown. From there, they will visit the Elizabethtown City Cemetery where Steve Mather will demonstrate and discuss what can be learned from grave dowsing. For more information, call 270-862-3209.

  • PHOTO: Vincent wins $20 gift certificate from summer reading program

    Candy Vincent was the winner of a $20 gift certificate from Lincolns Loft for the LaRue County Public Library’s adult summer reading program. Another drawing for a $20 certificate will be held on July 31. The more books you read, the more entries you have. Cathy Luttrell, LCPL adult programs coordinator, presented Vincent with the certificate.

  • BIRTH: Ben and Angela Roberts welcome daughter, Audrie Faith

     Ben and Angela Roberts of Elizabethtown announce the birth of a daughter, Audrie Faith Roberts, at 8:18 p.m. April 10, 2012.

    Audrie Faith was born at Hardin Memorial Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces and was 19-inches long.

    She is welcomed home by a sister, Addilyn Grace Roberts.

    Maternal grandparents are Dan and Maxine Davis of Louisville.

    Paternal grandparents are John and Diane Roberts of Hodgenville. Paternal great-grandmother is Elizabeth Gordon.

  • ENGAGEMENT: Aaron L. Gibson and Tammy K. Beams

     Aaron L. Gibson and Tammy K. Beams of Upton announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

    The bride to be is the daughter of William and Sheila Beams of Hodgenville and Jimmie and Della Wood of Hodgenville. She is the granddaughter of Genrose Ward and the late Eura Ward of Magnolia; and the late Victor and Ova Beams of Hudgens.

    She is a 1991 graduate of LaRue County High School. She is employed at 20/20 Eyecare as an optical technician.

  • COLUMN: Common questions when freezing vegetables

     Every year when summer squash and zucchini start coming in abundance I get asked how to preserve it. Here are the instructions from “So Easy to Preserve,” a food preservation resource from University of Georgia:

    Freezing summer squash – Choose young squash with tender skin. Wash and cut into one half inch slices. Water blanch three minutes. Cool promptly, drain and package, leaving one-half-inch headspace. Seal and freeze.
