  • ENGAGEMENT: Katelyn Elizabeth Davila and John Douglas Henderson

    Katelyn Elizabeth Davila of Hodgenville and John Douglas Henderson of Summersville announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

    The bride to be is a 2008 graduate of LaRue County High School and a student at Western Kentucky University where she is majoring in management with a double concentration in business administration and human resources management.

    She is the daughter of Barbara Howard Davila of Hodgenville and Larry Davila of Phenix City, Ala., and the granddaughter of Lura Leigh Thomas of Hodgenville.

  • COLUMN: It's that strawberry time of year

     This time of year we all soon have the opportunity to enjoy locally grown strawberries. The Farmers Market is at the Extension Office parking area at 807 Old Elizabethtown Road 2-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays.

    Here’s information on how to make your own strawberry jam or you can follow the manufacturer’s instructions on any type of pectin product such as Sure Jell.

    Uncooked Strawberry Freezer Jam

    1 3/4 cups crushed strawberries (about 1 quart)

    4 cups sugar

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • All Veterans Reunion planned for May 18-19 in Lawrenceburg

     The 6th Annual All Veterans Reunion In Kentucky will be held May 18-19 at the American Legion Fairgrounds in Lawrenceburg. A new feature of this year's reunion will be the "Scott Harper Memorial Motorcycle Run and Show."

     James Higdon, author of “The Cornbread Mafia” had a book signing Monday at Lincolns Loft in Hodgenville. Left, Lisa Downs of New Haven asked Higdon to sign her copy. The book deals with the largest homegrown marijuana syndicate in American history.

  • Pierce to speak at Christian Writers Conference in June

    Comedienne and author Chonda Pierce will serve as keynote speaker at the 16th annual Kentucky Christian Writers Conference June 22-23 at Grace Heartland Church in Elizabethtown.
    A “meet and greet” with conference faculty will be 7-9 p.m. June 21 at the church.
    Pierce has authored six books, including her most recent release, Laughing in the Dark.

     As a part of our community’s preparation for LaRue County’s Relay for Life event on May 11-12 at Hodgenville Elementary School, the local Relay for Life Committee is recognizing individual cancer survivors, caretakers and the teams who are raising funds for the event.

  • Relay for Life making progress toward goal

    With a little more than a week until Relay 2012, LaRue County Relay for Life teams are scrambling to reach the $49,500 goal for this year’s event scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. May 11 at Hodgenville Elementary School. This year’s Relay runs through noon, Saturday, May 12.
    Regina Childress, County Chair, is pleased with the teams’ progress and notes that many teams still have events planned for this week and through May 12 including Buffalo Baptist, Veirs Crew, Howardstown Relay and the Boaters, Campers and Horse Lovers teams.

  • 'Small Town Sexy' author to speak at Chamber dinner

    “Small Town Sexy” author Kim Huston will be the guest speaker for the 2012 LaRue County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting May 10.
    “She will speak on the allure of living in small town America,” said LaRue County Chamber of Commerce Director Jessica Davis, “and I believe residents of LaRue County can definitely relate to that.”
    Huston, a Bardstown resident, formerly of Bloomfield, writes in her book about the offerings of a small town while capturing the charm that small communities display.
