Hodgenville Police Chief Steve Johnson has been hit in the head with a folding chair, smacked with the lid of a cooler, whacked with a kendo stick and clobbered with a trash can lid.

But it wasn’t in the line of duty.

Johnson was bitten by the wrestling bug in 2002 and has either refereed or competed in 25 to 30 matches around the area.

Saturday night, he’ll be back in the ring with Ultimate Championship Wrestling at LaRue County Park and Recreation. He will challenge Val Joiner in a taped fist match.

“It’s more of a boxing match,” Johnson said. “The only way to win is to knock the other guy out.”

The match was set up after Johnson intervened in a UCW match at the Hardin County Fair. Two wrestlers ganged up on Chris Michaels and Johnson got in the ring “to break it up.”

Johnson took a beating and asked for a rematch at the LaRue County Fair. He, along with Michaels and Impressive Anthony Wayne took on Rowdy Red, The Big Dawg Cujo and Val Joiner with Manager Mike Justice.

Johnson won with a pin over Joiner.

“A challenge was made after that match by Val Joiner,” Johnson said. “He wanted to get back at me. We argued and I challenged him to a taped fist match.”

His strategy for the contest? Avoid brass knuckles.

Several other matchups will take place with Bonecrusher Jeff Crowe, Rowdy Red, Psycho Medic, Charles Colton, Frank the Tank, Mike Justice and Sebastian Stardust.

“We won’t know the full card until that night,” Johnson said, adding that some of the older UCW stars “could pop in.”

UCW stars usually sign autographs and have photos made with fans. And some of the fans are as much fun to watch as the wrestlers.

Johnson said UCW would like to bring a monthly show to LaRue County “but it will take participation from people to bring them back.”

“Everybody will have an interesting time,” Johnson said. “They’ll have fun.”

Bell time is 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 at the door or $7 in advance by contacting Johnson at 270-268-3693. Children 4 and under are free with paid adult.
