There are no strangers here

Angie and Reed Smith, owners of 224 Farmhouse Diner, are turning their dream of owning a restaurant into their customer’s experience of dining in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

“Having a restaurant was always my dream,” said Angie Smith, “I never thought it would become a reality.”

When Reed mentioned building a restaurant, Angie said she looked at him and thought ‘you have to be kidding me.’ But he wasn’t kidding and they began the process of building a restaurant on their farm.

“I had my doubts about opening a restaurant here on the farm, but he told me you never know until you try,” she said.

Smith said it seemed like it took forever with all the paper work and hoops you have to jump through to build a restaurant but when the building started going up she finally felt like it was going to happen.

“The name was one of my first things I wanted to choose,” she said, “I didn’t want it to be my name because it isn’t just my diner, so we called it ‘farmhouse’ because it looks like a little farmhouse and I used 224 because there isn’t another diner on this road named farmhouse diner. And our slogan we came up with in our travels; There are no strangers here, only friends we haven’t met.”

For Smith cooking is more than preparing food; “Cooking is one of my passions, I love to cook and I cook from the heart. My mother was an excellent cook and inspired my love of cooking.”

Smith added, “We have a big family, we raised our children on this farm and we didn’t have a lot of money so we did what we could with what we had. I canned a lot and we grew our food and raised our beef.”

They continue to raise their own beef and serve it on their menu, Smith said this is a big draw for many of their customers.

Their restaurant is also available for more than breakfast and lunch; “We utilize our restaurant in a lot of ways. People have rented out the restaurant, we’ve had small gatherings and church groups come in and I can cater for small groups,” Smith said.

“It’s not always easy, we have help from our children and grandchildren. And we’ve had a lot of fun meeting people.
