STUDENT FEATURE: Gladiators were deadly serious about their game

LaRue County Middle School social studies teacher Jim B. Phelps submitted several articles written by his sixth grade students for possible publication. Those chosen for publication will appear as space allows in The LaRue County Herald News. Phelps stresses the importance of liberties promised in the First Amendment to his class. It is our hope that these students will realize their works appear because of those basic rights outlined in the First Amendment. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Ah, gladiators – some of the world’s most feared men and women. Many people from different worlds died in this “game.”
The gladiators had to survive grueling training in harsh conditions.
All of this started in Rome to honor the dead, but it was not to remain that way.
Early gladiators were competitors taught how to handle a knife for a game that began as an honorable deed.
Many of the later gladiators did not have a choice.
