America’s strength – where is it to be found?
The answer is given in scripture. “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34) Righteousness is a moral uprightness and social justice. “Reproach” means “to bend low” in shame, in disgrace or in ultimate downfall.
The strength of our nation is in our people walking in uprightness, standing for truth and justice, bowing in reverent submission before God. Sin, selfish and shameful living, will ultimately bring our nation to disgrace and downfall.
Plato said, “The life of a nation is but the life of the home writ large.” So, ultimately one of the strengths of our nation is the home where character is shaped and formed. If our homes are places of love, respect and discipline, the nation will ultimately reflect it; but if the homes are places of abuse, conflict, and permissiveness, the nation will soon reveal that. For our nation to be strong, we must pay close attention to our moral fiber.
Patriotism, or the spirit of our people, helps to make our nation strong. That patriotic spirit includes a love of one’s soil, an appreciation for our heritage, a respect for our leaders, a respect for the family, a respect for the flag and the law, and a respect for mankind. These values we must have for survival as a nation.
The strength of our nation is also found in our Biblical heritage. This is not to say all our founding fathers were Christians, but they did establish our nation on principles that come from the Bible. Read our nation’s documents, listen to the pledge to the flag, look at the inscriptions on our money, and we are reminded of our religious heritage. George Washington in his first Thanksgiving proclamation called on the nation to be thankful to God.
Moral fiber taught and lived in the home, a sense of patriotism and living out our religious heritage – these must be kept alive for our nation to survive. Someone put it this way: “America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
May God bless America. Let us pray for our nation.
