The LaRue County High School Speech and Debate team is off to a rousing start this year with students making finals and placing at nearly every tournament they’ve attended.

Last weekend, the debate team of Shelby Rogers and Spenser Reed, both sophomores, advanced to the semi-finals of Public Forum debate at the Ohio Valley Invitational debate tournament held at the University of Kentucky. Rogers and Reed defeated teams from Ohio, Illinois, and Alabama on their way to their third-place finish. Their next outing, when they will again debate the top teams from across the country, will be at the prestigious Barkley Forum in Atlanta.

In the speech events, sophomore Ian Mather placed second in a field of more than 40 competitors in Dramatic Interpretation at the Grant County Home of the Brave Speech Tournament this past weekend. Mather has made finals at both the last two tournaments, placing fourth at the Danville High School Invitational before Thanksgiving. Mather has also been accepted into the Barkley Forum at Emory University and will attend along with Rogers and Reed, freshman Chelsea Blair and sophomore Jeshua Logsdon.
