South Fork Baptist Church’s Health Ministry will host a community-wide health fair Saturday. The fair will be free for the public and will include vendors from various services.
Carolyn Saltsman, a registered nurse and the congregational nurse at South Fork Baptist Church, said that this is the second fair the ministry has held. The first fair was well received in 2007 and she hopes this year’s is just as successful.
Saltsman said that the Health Ministry at South Fork began in 2005 as a way to serve the church’s congregation and the community. The idea to hold a health fair was born out of a desire to serve and inform.
“It’s just a good way for the community to get information and screenings on their health. It’s just something the church wanted to do to serve the community,” Saltsman said.
For the fair, about 30 health-related organizations will gather in the church’s fellowship hall and make their services available. Visitors will be able to speak with representatives from assisted living providers, pharmacies and fitness centers, just to name a few. They’ll also be able to receive vision, sun damage, ear canal and dental screenings, blood pressure checks and fasting blood sugar checks.
Saltsman said that most of the vendors are planning to allow customers to participate in drawings and give away prizes. She said that the congregation will have a table at the event where they will give away door prizes and provide tours of the church to visitors.
Saltsman said she is excited about the fair, and expects it to be a great success.
“I’m hoping for a huge crowd.”
The church hopes to make the health fair a yearly event and she encourages the community to take advantages of all the services that will be offered. The health fair will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the South Fork Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. For more information or a complete listing of vendors, call 325-3626.
