Sherrie’s Barber Shop celebrates 30 years

Now in her 30th year of running a small town barber shop, Sherrie Vittitow said the time has “truly flown by.”

Vittitow grew up in Louisville but made the small community of Magnolia her home in 1983. Randy and Shirley Johnson, Vittitow’s parents, made the move from Louisville to Magnolia earlier that year.

She became interested in being a beautician in her teens, and constantly sought chances to cut and style hair.

“My mom bought an old barber chair and stuck it down in the basement,” said Vittitow. “She let me use that space to practice on cutting everybody’s hair in our family ....”

Vittitow graduated from Tri City Barber College in December 1980 and worked at a privately owned beauty salon as a barber for three years. However, she wanted a shop of her own.

After Vittitow moved to Magnolia, she decided it was time to open her own shop. Sherrie’s Barber Shop opened Sept. 12, 1983, next door to Magnolia Stop & Shop. It was built as an addition to the main building with the help of Doug and Punkin Sprowls.

“I’ve been doing this for so long, and have had the chance to get to know everyone, that they all just feel like family to me,” Vittitow said.

“I have had customers who have been coming to me for years, some since I opened … there are also those customers who have passed on, that would come in regularly who I miss seeing.”

Angela “Angie” Druen, manager of Magnolia Stop & Shop, said she has been going to Sherrie’s about 20 years.

“You can go to some places now and ask for a trim and they don’t know what a trim is. Sherrie knows…” Druen said.

“She’s just an all around good person and I have a whole lot of fond memories because I see her every day …we really are like a family here.”

Chrissie Kappel is another customer of 20 years.

“She cuts my hair, my husband’s hair and all four of my girls – they’re her adopted grandkids,” said Kappel.

Chad Gray, 16, said his father introduced him to Sherrie’s Barber Shop a couple of years ago.

“I remember when my dad first brought me in to shop – he said he remembered getting hair cuts in here when he was younger,” said Gray.

Vittitow said there is no way she would have been successful if it hadn’t been for the years of continuous support from her customers.

Sherrie’s Barber Shop is located at 8895 New Jackson Highway in Magnolia. She can be reached at 270-324-3005.
