Season summary: ECTC's soccer and basketball

-A A +A

Two years ago Elizabethtown Community and Technical College brought club sports back to the college campus. For the first time since the late 1970s, student/athletes donned the Barons uniform to represent the college in men’s and women’s soccer and men’s basketball.

Led by all-volunteer coaches, and supported by college faculty and staff volunteers and community donations, the teams have wrapped up their second complete season in the three sports.

The following is a synopsis of the 2013-2014 season.  The teams played competitive schedules, and the final records did not reflect the quality of the teams or their abilities. Each team learned and improved throughout the season.  Each team is looking forward to welcoming new and returning players next year, as the sports program grows in quality, interest and support.

Men’s Soccer

The Barons Men’s Soccer Team, led by head coach Alex Molinas and assistant coach Angel Hernandez, concluded their 2013 season with a record of two wins, seven losses and four ties.  Although the season record was disappointing, the team has generated interest and support from prospective players and competition alike.

The team lost three games by one goal and three games by two goals. The Barons proved to be very competitive with each team they played.

The Barons’ last month of the season was challenging as players suffered injuries — leaving the team short-handed with reserves and lost final games in the last 10 minutes of competition. Despite the record, ECTC was represented very favorably by the team and the coaches.

Players include Alex Cook, Mason Morgan and Brandon Centers, all LaRue County High School graduates, Michael Bell, Andrew Buckles, Avery Buckles, Tyler Gipson, David Gomez, Michael Johnson, William Kohler, Tristan Long, Nikos Mastoroudis, Zachary Page, Drew Taylor, Jacob Thompson and Chris Wilk.

Women’s Soccer

Fielding a competitive women’s soccer team has been challenging for Coach Andre Cooper, but his patience, hard work, and persistence paid off with the 2013 Barons Womens Soccer Team competing in four games this fall.

In early October, the team won their first game in the short two-year history of women’s soccer at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.

Players include Adriane Buckles, Allison Call, Abbie Parish, Auburn Yates, Kayla Doyle, Morgan English, Latisha Malloy, Danielle Thompson, Ciji Miller, Kendra Goodman, Jessica Exler, Sarah Kowalski, Courtney Boyd and Brittni Sherman.

Men’s Basketball

The Barons Basketball season has come to an end with nine wins and 11 losses.

The roster included Aaron Butterworth of Buffalo, Cody Crim, Jansen Flood, Austin Geer, Greg Johnson, Christopher McDonald, Antone Miller, Ronald Phillips, Andy Read and Kyle Meredith, a LaRue County High School graduate.

Coaches are John Veague and Roman Ritchie, both LaRue County residents.
