Lavada and Cletus Hawks have grown a bumper crop of watermelons. Their largest, to date, is a 70-pound watermelon grown from heirloom seed. It is about 30-inches long. Lavada, above, brought it to The LaRue County Herald News' office last week for a photo. The couple had to roll the melon to their riding lawnmower to transport it to the car. They put the seatbelt around it so it wouldn't be a distraction when Lavada was driving. They also harvested a smaller, 45-pound melon.
