Powered by senior Truman Padgett, LaRue County finished third in the boys' standings Saturday during the Class 2A, Region 2 track championships at Marion County High School. The Lady Hawks finished fifth in the girls' competition. Padgett earned three state berths by sweeping the 200 (23.45 seconds) and 400 dashes (53.28) and teaming with seniors Seth Clifford and Bradley Dyson and junior Ryan Durbin to take second in the 3,200 relay. “I’m pleased overall, but I’ve ran a lot faster and better than I did on this track today,” said Padgett, who went to state in 2008 in one event. The Hawks’ all-senior 1,600 relay of Tobi Chirunga, Clifford, Dyson and Tristen Hines placed second to get into State. “It’s great to have your team with you. You push each other and you cheer for each other,” Padgett said. “It’s great to see the team succeed.” Clifford won the 800 to give himself an individual state berth. The Lady Hawks had two state qualifiers, both in field events. Freshman Shana Zajdel won the triple jump and senior Haley Carrico finished second in the high jump.
