Mat Hawks dominate Region Sectional Duals

The LaRue County Mat Hawks dominated the 6th Region Sectional Duals going 4-0 Saturday and becoming the number one seed from the region for the Class A State Dual Tournament.

“I was a bit worried about the duals on Saturday,” said head coach Gary Canter.  “We had three forfeits as three of our starters are middle school wrestlers and had to compete at the middle school district tournament at North Hardin. So, in essence, we were behind at the start of every dual, 18-0 if the other teams would have had those three weight classes.”

The fiery head coach had nothing to worry about on this day. His team showed up ready for the challenge and dominated in every aspect of the competition.

The Hawks started by demolishing a good Taylor County team, 64-6. Then the team rolled over Louisville Central’s B squad, 63-0 and blew through Louisville Western, 66-6.

“We seem to be maturing each week,” said Canter. “This team had a stiff challenge this weekend. I am not sure how we would have handled the challenge the first couple of weeks of the season, but as the season has progressed, this team has grown and matured. I like the direction we are heading and the speed in which we are growing up.”

This set up the championship match with Louisville Central. Central came into the dual with all weight classes and so the Hawks started out in a hole, 18-0.  Then the Hawks got on a pinning roll. In years past, all of Canter’s teams have had the characteristic of wrestling with emotion and when his teams rack up a few pins in a row, the Mat Hawks usually run away with the match. This was the case in this dual.

“We got on one of our patented pinning sprees,” said Canter. “We feed off of the emotion and if we can get it rolling we can be awfully tough. We have thrived off of these ‘pinning sprees’ for the past 12 years and today was just another one of those. I am proud of the boys and pleased to see them rise to the occasion with such confidence.”

The Hawks will compete at home tonight in the high school gymnasium as they host a tri-meet with Louisville Male and North Hardin. Wrestling will start at 6 p.m.
