A Nelson County man known locally as a UPS delivery driver fell victim to a farming accident Sunday.
Marion Ray Spain was pronounced dead at about 5 p.m. outside his residence at 3017 Icetown Road just outside Boston, Ky.
Spain, 56, was mowing a ditch when he ran over a rock at an angle, which overturned his small tractor and pinned him underneath it. Two people arrived at the scene and unsuccessfully tried to free him.
Nelson County Deputy Coroner Kevin Anderson said the cause of death was not certain. He said Spain died from asphyxiation or internal injuries caused by the weight of the tractor. No other injuries were found.
“He was a long-time resident here,” Anderson said. “He’s been here for years. This is just one of those freak accidents.”
Anderson said the small tractor had a hay wagon attached to it and was used primarily for mowing and light farm work.
Spain was a local UPS driver and delivered for more than 30 years.
His funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine Catholic Church in New Haven. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kappel Funeral Home in Boston.
