Some Hardin, LaRue and Meade county horse owners recently completed another successful four-session horse college featuring discussions on nutrition, health, hoof care, and facilities and horse behavior. The participants requested a tour of the horse industry in Lexington.
In response to their request, Dr. Robert Coleman, University of Kentucky Extension equine specialist and coordinator of the Horse College has arranged a one-day motor coach tour to some interesting horse locations in the Lexington area.
Tour stops will include UK Equine Research facilities, a major national equine veterinary clinic, and one of the area’s top thoroughbred horse farms. Tour details and costs are given below. The tour is in response to requests from Horse College participants but is open to anyone interested.
The tour date is Friday, June 8 and the bus will depart from the Hardin County Extension Office in Elizabethtown promptly at 8 a.m. Scheduled tour events include:
• 9:30 a.m. – UK Animal Science Research Farm
• 10:45 a.m. – UK Veterinary Sciences Equine Reproduction Center
• Lunch
• 1:30 p.m. – Hagyard Equine Medical Center
• 3 p.m. – Commercial Thoroughbred Horse Farm
• 4:30 p.m. – Depart Lexington for Elizabethtown
• 6 p.m. – Arrive at Hardin County Extension Office.
If you are interested in the tour, reservations are now being taken on a first-come, first-serve basis until the 56-passenger motor coach is full. Once capacity is reached, a waiting list will be available.
Deadline for registration is May 31 or when the bus is full, whichever comes first. To register for the tour, call the LaRue County (358-3401) or Hardin County (765-4121). Payment of the $30 registration fee per person (which covers cost of bus and lunch) is expected at or soon after registering, and only paid registrations will be guaranteed a seat on the bus.
