LaRue entered Thursday's 18th District Cup play on the Hawks' home course four strokes behind Caverna, but when the score cards were turned in, the Hawks emerged with a two-stroke lead over the Colonels, 14 ahead of Green County, and 24 better than Hart.
"We practiced alternate shot play a couple of times before Thursday, but no matter how you do in practice, it's hard to gauge the way it will go in a real match," said Rip Collins, LaRue's coach. "We've got three great senior leaders on this team, though, and they helped pull us through."
One of those upper classmen, Bryan Bault, teamed with fourth-grader Cameron Dawson for a combined 36 strokes. Another senior, Christian Seymour, alternated strokes with freshman Kyle Meredith, shooting a 42. The third twelfth-grader, Alex Thomas, and freshman Trevor Skaggs shot a 54.
LaRue totaled 78 points, Caverna 84, Green County 89, and Hart County 87.
Sophomore Hilary Eastridge clubbed a 45 to lead LaRue against Hart County Thursday on the LaRue County Country Club course. Teammate Corri Jones, a senior, carded a 50 while junior Michelle Burroughs had a 57.
Bault carded a one-over par 37, pacing LaRue in a tri-match with Taylor County and Campbellsville at LaRue County Golf Course Sept. 10.
Seymour shot a 41, Meredith 43, Skaggs 49, Thomas 50, and Dawson 51.
Taylor County won the match with a 160, LaRue shot a 168, and Campbellsville 176.
In girls' play, Eastridge stroked a 43, Jones 49, and Burroughs a 54 as they placed second.
"We finished strong, but gave away too many shots on the course which cost us the match," said Collins. "The girls played well; they are giving their best and that's all I can ask."
In a junior varsity match Sept. 10 at Elizabethtown’s Par-3 American Legion course, Jackson Venegas stroked a team low 44 for LaRue. Cameron Lasley added a 45, Keaton Puckett 46, Ezekiel Venegas 48, Lane Meredith 49, Chase Patterson 50, and Chance Whitlock 52.
Bault and Seymour each shot in the 30’s for LaRue as the Hawks totaled 160 to Central Hardin's 155 on the par-36 front nine at LaRue County Country Club Sept. 9.
Kyle Meredith stroked a 41, Thomas 48, Skaggs 49, Dawson 54, Lane Meredith 62, and Venegas 67.
Central Hardin’s Patrick Schirmer scored lowest for the Bruins with a 36.
