LaRue County earned a new item for its basketball trophy case. The Hawks fought off some fourth-quarter surges to defeat Green County 59-49 in the championship game of the 18th District boys' basketball tournament Friday.
Playing on a neutral court in Munfordville, the Hawks won their first 18th District title since 2003.
LaRue will play Thursday in the boys' 5th Region tournament at Marion County High School. The Hawks were paired with John Hardin, runners up from the 17th District. The tournament features two games Wednesday and two Thursday with LaRue playing in the late game, which is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. Admission is $6.
The semifinals are set for 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday with the championship game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10.
Green County won the girls' 5th Region title Friday with a 66-59 win over host Hart County. The Lady Raiders had defeated LaRue 78-41 Tuesday to end LaRue's season. The Lady Hawks finished the year 14-12.
The girls' 5th Region Tournament holds opening round games Monday and Tuesday with semifinals Friday and the championship set for Saturday. That tournament is at Nelson County High School.
