The LaRue County Lady Hawks freshman softball team finished the first week of the 2010 season with two close losses and two convincing wins.
On March 24, the Lady Hawks traveled to Nelson County to face an experienced Cardinal team in doubleheader action, losing 3-1 and 10-8. March 27, the Lady Hawks hosted the John Hardin Lady Bulldogs and defended their home field in convincing fashion, winning 7-2 and 13-0 (three innings).
Coach Dean R. Miller said he was very pleased with the effort both days.
“We’re a very young team and Wednesday we came out a little nervous but we were able to stay close to a much older squad which I think gave us a boost of confidence,” he said. “Saturday we seemed much more relaxed and confident. We have outstanding pitching which allows both our offense and defense to play aggressively.”
Team members are freshmen Danielle Fancher, Kayla Nunn and Kayla Skaggs; eighth-graders Nicole Deavers and Brigitte Skaggs; seventh-graders Trishtian Cruse, Sierra Mullins and Michaela Rock; and sixth-graders Emillee Cundiff, Delany Eastridge, Haleigh Gregory, Jill Hughes, Natalie Mullins, Hannah Murray, Mallory Skaggs, Shakeya Washington and Katie Whitmer.
The team plays host to Bullitt Central at 6 p.m. Friday and will travel Saturday to play in the SW Pulaski County Invitational Tournament.
