The LaRue County Lady Hawks Volleyball Team was defeated in the championship game of the 18th District tournament.
The Ladies came up a little short against a talented Green County Lady Dragons Team 26-24, 19-25 and 19-25. Green County has now won their eighth consecutive district title.
The two teams split their regular season matches, with each team winning on their home court.
“This was a very tough loss for us because we were playing so well for most of the night,” said Coach Ben Schell. “However, the girls played their hearts out and deserve all the praise in the world. This is the first time in a district final that we were able to take Green County to three sets and push them the entire way.”
All three sets were extremely close with neither team leading by more than five points. LaRue County took a 25-24 lead in the first set on Lauren Patterson’s kill and scored the victory on an attack error by Green County.
Green County came out fast in the second set, leading by scores of 5-1, 7-4 and 9-6, but LaRue came back to tie the score at nine. The score stayed close in the second set until the Lady Dragons pulled out to a 17-12 lead. LaRue County came back to trail by only one point at 19-18, but the Lady Dragons pulled away to win 25-19.
The Lady Hawks started the third set strong leading 7-3, but Green County came back to tie the score at nine. The third set score stayed close with neither team leading by more than three points. Molly Kennedy’s kill closed the Dragon’s lead to 19-18, but Green County took a 21-18 lead on an attack error by LaRue County and a kill by Green County’s Danielle Collison. The Lady Dragons pulled away to win 25-19.
Patterson had six kills, two aces and four blocks; Brea Huhn had 10 kills and two digs; Kennedy had seven kills and 14 assists; and Kara Paden had three kills.
“In a game like the one tonight, you hate to see either team lose because both teams deserve to win,” said Schell. “Unfortunately for us, we were on the losing end tonight. I couldn’t be any more proud of the players than I am. We had a District championship in our sights and could just about touch it.”
Huhn and Kennedy were each named the All-District and All-Tournament teams.
The Lady Hawks were knocked from the 5th Region Volleyball Tournament Monday with an opening round loss to the Marion County Lady Knights, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22.
LaRue’s Ladies appeared to have the upper hand going into the third match, but a serving error sent the ball back to Marion. The Lady Knights went on a 7-1 run to set up match point.
LaRue County defeated Marion twice in the regular season.
Senior setter Molly Kennedy, who was named to the All-Tournament team, led LaRue County with 20 assists and six kills, while senior outside hitter Brea Huhn had nine kills and an ace and sophomore outside hitter Kara Paden added seven kills.
Lauren Patterson finished with four aces, three kills and a block, senior Angelina Marcum had four kills, two aces and two assists and sophomore Haley Holt chipped in with two kills and a block for LaRue County, which finished the season with a school-record 26 wins.
