LaRue splits a pair of varsity volleyball matches

The LaRue County Lady Hawks volleyball team split two matches this past week with a win on Tuesday against Hart County, but then a hard loss to Marion County on Thursday.

The Lady Hawks were victorious over Hart County Aug. 18 in straight sets of 25-16 and 25-19.

“It took us a little while to get going tonight,” Coach Ben Schell said. “We had moments of greatness and moments of not-so-greatness, but in the end the important thing is that the girls did everything they could to win the match.” Junior Molly Kennedy led the way with 18 assists, three kills and four aces.

Junior Brea Huhn had seven kills; junior Lauren Patterson had five kills and two blocks; junior Angelina Marcum had three kills; senior Melanie Huhn had four kills; senior Kristin Thompson had three digs.

“We mixed it up tonight much more than we had the past three matches,” said Schell. “We were tipping, pushing and swinging which caused confusion on the Hart County side and led to some big points for us. Our serving was definitely our strong point again.”

Two nights later, the Lady Hawks suffered their first loss of the new season. Marion County was triumphant with straight set scores of 25-18 and 25-20.

The Hawks were led with Kennedy’s seven assists and Brea Huhn’s five kills.

“This match was a little bit of a wake-up call for us,” Schell said. “Marion was very good on the defensive end and we had a lot of trouble finding holes on the floor. We’ll use this match as a learning experience to see what we have to do to get better and compete at a higher level.”

The Lady Hawks play at Logan County Aug. 29.
