The Heartland Shines in 2009 is the theme for a fun-filled weekend of events in Elizabethtown. It’s the 27th year for the Kentucky Heartland Festival that is held each year during the last full weekend in August at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown.

The festival opens Friday night with exhibits, food, children’s rides and music on the bandstand and picks up  Saturday morning with the country ham breakfast, 5K run and parade along Dixie Avenue.

This year’s parade grand marshal is retired WHAS 11 news anchorman Gary Roedemeier, the winner of five regional Emmys. Also appearing in this year’s parade will be the new Armor Center commander at Fort Knox Maj. Gen. James Mike Milano.

The parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. If it rains, the parade will be rescheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

The remainder of Saturday’s events will be filled with music, crafts, rides, a martial arts tournament, canoe and kayak races, water ball, baby contests, vintage baseball, a car show, sky divers, hot air balloons, a ski show and a lip sync contest. The activities are centered at Freeman Lake Park

The Little Smilin’ Choo Choo will provide free shuttle rides around the park.

Food booths will be a little different this year. Organizers with the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce decided to use one food vendor this year so they can control the quality and quantity of food, Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce president Tim Asher said.
