 Why are there tombstones behind Smith’s Plaza?

A couple of damaged gravestones are behind Smith’s Plaza. They were probably left behind when a monument company closed. Above, a grave marker for Richard A. Sowers, a World War I veteran, shows some damage on two corners. We weren’t able to find many details about the serviceman. Ancestry.com says he is the son of James Q. and Sarah McDowell Sowers.

We found a couple of headstones leaning against the back of the building. 

According to Murrell Smith, developer of the property, a monument company rented office space at the Plaza several years ago.

Owner Harry Jackson said damaged tombstones were sometimes brought to the store for repair, if possible. The stones at the Plaza apparently were left behind when the business closed.
