High school greenhouse open to the public

-A A +A

This year’s production in the LCHS Agriscience Greenhouse has been a huge success story. The season opening was April 18 and sales have been strong. The community traditionally has supported the efforts of local high school students by purchasing a vast array of bedding plants and a great selection of high quality hanging baskets in the area.
Equally impressive to Misty Bivens, the greenhouse technology teacher, has been the assistance given by numerous student volunteers. They provide personalized service to every customer who visits the greenhouse. Students from the greenhouse class answer questions about individual plant characteristics and manage the checkout table. Other students from classes less specialized in the area of floriculture, help by carrying plants, watering and assisting with product display.
The greenhouse will be open for business from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturdays through the end of school, with extended hours May 7, the day before Mother’s Day.
A large selection of most plants are available, but supporters should hurry for best selection. In addition to the standard cell packs and hanging baskets, the school-based enterprise also has some rather unusual offerings. There are a wide variety of hanging baskets, 10- and 12-inch baskets of vining supertunias, vegetable crops and a wide variety of traditional bedding plants. Many plants were grown especially for Mother’s Day gifts. There will be specials as the school year will come to a close, but the best plants are available now. They include discounts on select hanging baskets, wave petunias and geraniums in 4.5-inch pots.
This year there is a new service being offered to customers. Many people have a favorite pot that they use for their plants, but trying to fill that pot can be a burden or they’ve purchased a pot in the past that they want to re-use. This year you can have your pot filled for you for $5 to $15, plus the cost of the plants, cost varies due to pot size. There is a menu of plants available. You can have this done while you wait or drop off a container and pick it up later. This is a new way to help customers recycle or re-use their favorite planter.
Delivery is offered for $3 to businesses or places of work in Hodgenville. Get together and put an order together and we’ll deliver them to you. This is a great way for you to get plants if you don’t have time to pick them out. This may be especially helpful for people who forget to get a Mother’s Day gift.
Orders are accepted by phone, fax or email. Ask for Misty Bivens at 358-2210, send a fax to 358-9469 or email misty.bivens@larue.kyschools.us.
Come out and support the LCHS greenhouse that provides opportunities for students to learn valuable lessons in business and marketing.
