The LaRue County golf team has competed in four meets this fall and despite some “pretty common errors” in the first tournament, is showing progress, according to Coach Justin Craft.
“Many kids lack consistency early in the season, and that’s an area we will look to improve upon as the season progresses,” Craft said.
The team played one meet in Shepherdsville against Bullitt East at the site of the 2011 region tournament. It gave senior Kyle Meredith and the rest of the players an “an important opportunity … to see all 18 holes of the course before the school year started.”
Meredith, who qualified last year for state is “hungry for another trip to the state tournament this year,” Craft said.
“His performance was a positive sign for his chances come September. He shot one-under on his final 9 holes. If he can put together a complete round, he’s one of the best in the region. We just have to work on his ball-striking consistency.”
Another consistent player is seventh grader Cameron Dawson who is also playing middle school football.
Although he is splitting time between two sports, Craft said the middle schooler has a “legitimate shot at qualifying for state despite his young age. In those matches when he’s not available, we have to get more consistency from other golfers like Austin (Hite) and Jesse (Hornback). They have both shown great ability thus far, and will become more comfortable as the season goes on in handling pressure. I’m proud of their growth so far, and the team will rely heavily on them in our matches and tournaments.”
The Hawks play Thursday at home against Taylor County and Campbellsville.
