Glendale firefighter dies while fighting vehicle fire

A Glendale firefighter lost his life early Wednesday when he was struck by a tractor trailer on Interstate 65.

The Glendale Volunteer Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at 2:54 a.m. at the 87-mile marker in the southbound lane.  

At 3:28 a.m., Kentucky State Police Post 4 received a call concerning an accident involving a tractor trailer and a fire truck at the same location.

Fireman Jonathan E. French, 25, who was trying to extinguish the initial vehicle fire, was struck by a tractor trailer driven by 44-year-old John M. Hatton of Covington.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner.

Firefighter Lisa A. French, 43, of Eastview, also was struck and suffered serious injuries. She was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.   

Hatton was uninjured.  

The accident is under investigation by KSP accident reconstructionist Trooper Bryan Washer.  KSP is being assisted at the scene by the Central Hardin Fire Department,  Elizabethtown Fire Department, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Hardin County EMS, and the Hardin County Coroner’s Office
