FOOTBALL: Hawks win Homecoming

-A A +A
By Nathaniel Bryan

Alex Cook kicked a 24-yard field goal with 53 seconds left to lift the LaRue County Hawks to a 17-14 homecoming night win Friday against the Warren East Raiders.

LaRue County (3-3) took a 7-0 lead in the opening 7 minutes thanks to a 7-yard touchdown run by senior fullback Drew Newberry and an extra point from Cook, but the Raiders (4-2) scored with 53 seconds left in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Burns to Christian Flores. Burns hooked up with Flores for the conversion to give the Raiders an 8-7 lead and Warren East didn’t trail again until Cook’s second field goal of his career.

LaRue County’s Cody Thompson carried the ball 13 times for 104 yards to record his fifth 100-yard game of the season. Newberry added 59 yards on 17 carries, while Gabe Shirley had 62 yards on seven carries. Shirley’s 24-yard touchdown run and Cook’s extra point tied the score at 14 with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

UP NEXT: LaRue County is off next week. The Hawks host Class 4-A, District 3 rival Henry County at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
